Honouring roots and connecting people.
Matr boomie (meaning motherland in Hindi), is a fair trade collection from India that marries modern design sensibility with inspiring traditional art forms. Their exclusive, modern, boho-chic items make perfect gifts or additions to any household.
Founded by Manish and Ruchi Gupta in 2006, their journey began with a goal to relieve the extreme poverty in their native India, by bridging together the rich culture and potential of rural Indians with opportunities of the modern world. Since then, Matr Boomie has been able to provide opportunities to minorities and women while helping them realize their creative, economic and leadership potential. Presently, their network has grown to empower over 20,000 artisans in 40 partner communities throughout India. With a passion that has enabled them to build a credible force in the fair-trade market, Manish and Ruchi have made a meaningful difference in the lives of partner artisans, their families and communities. Guided by their deep respect for mother earth and commitment to using natural, eco-friendly and ethically sourced materials, each of their handcrafted pieces has been uniquely designed to honour traditional Indian artforms through modern design.
Why fair trade?
The purpose of fair trade is to educate and liberate disadvantaged artisans and connect them to global markets, alleviating poverty and promoting sustainability. Fair Trade is a socially-conscious partnership that encompasses principles that dismiss child and slave labour, while encouraging environmentally-friendly processes, healthy work environments, gender equality and fair, living wages. As part of their mission to create a world that’s more compassionate, Matr Boomie embraces the fair trade philosophy and goes even further by investing in development projects such as, healthcare, education, skills training, loan programs and scholarships for women, minorities and people with special needs.
